The EndingHunger movement began in late 2009 as a signature drive. The petition is a tool to show governments everywhere that we want them to do whatever is needed to end hunger.  The petition reads:

"We who support this petition find it unacceptable that close to one billion people are chronically hungry. Through the United Nations, we call upon governments to make the elimination of hunger their top priority until that goal is reached."

After signing the petition, a participant receives a personal link that they can share. In addition, they also receive a personal link to the viral map of the website, where they can visualize their impact as their efforts spread from city to city throughout the world. The site also shows individuals their social impact measure: how their social impact ranks in comparison to everyone in the world and within their country. This unique viral mapping system was created by Riley Crane, post doctoral fellow at Massachusetts Institute of Technology .

By November 2010 more than 3.2 million people in all parts of the world had added their names to the petition. It was then presented to governments for the first time at a ceremony held at the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization headquarters in Rome, Italy.

The situation is urgent.  United Nations member countries have agreed to the target of reducing the incidence of hunger by half – to no more than 420 million people – by 2015.  Obviously, with one billion people now hungry, the world needs to step up its efforts. If we continue at the current pace we will only reach the target by 2150, with hundreds of millions of needless deaths as a result.
