Right now in the Sahelregion of west Africa, over 15 million people are at risk of becoming famine victims. Already, over 1.3 million children are suffering from acute malnutrition due to failed harvests, rising food prices and the impact of climate change. Many are worried that this could become the next Horn of Africa. Too many lives were lost last year because the world reacted too slowly.
Football is the only truly global sport watched and played by businessmen and street children in rich and poor countries alike. Using its power and popularity, the football industry is increasingly aware of the good it can do. Over the past several years, the Association of European Professional Football Leagues have played a special role in efforts to highlight the global fight against hunger.
To kick-start the campaign, Match Day Against Hunger will be held from 31 March to 1 April. Every match played by over 300 clubs in 20 leagues from 16 countries across Europe will be dedicated to ‘sounding the alarm’ on the Sahel crisis. The message of the campaign will reach millions of fans from Glasgow to Madrid and from Lisbon to Moscow.
The European Union’s humanitarian aid department (ECHO) and FAO are working together in the Sahel helping people to survive and to feed themselves in the future. Football is also about teamwork as it brings communities and nations together for a greater goal.
Let’s join in raising the alarm for people in the Sahel.
TOGETHER WE CAN SAVE LIVES.
