Watching the DIVE! movie trailer can be shocking for many of us. This group of self-proclaimed activists/dumpsters surf their local garbage bins looking for edible food that’s been thrown away. Followers of the “eat trash” movement prove that some of the garbage is still tasty – even if it’s no longer fit for shop shelves.
The movie claims that as much as 96 billion pounds of food is wasted every year in the United States. Many other developed countries are in the same situation.
“Why is food thrown away when some people are left without any, even here in the US?” asks one activist who gets arrested for dump searching to feed the hungry.
Last year, a journalist from The Times newspaper confessed that she had been feeding her family from supermarket bins for more than a year. Her article stirred controversy, on the grounds that it promoted an unsafe way of consuming food.
But really, should we not be looking at the deeper questions raised here?
