The Hungry Children Map

The Hungry Children Map The Hungry Children Map

This map shows startling facts about nutrition and children in our world where one out of four children from developing countries are underweight.
Malnutrition has considerably greater impact on vulnerable children than adults. Where they don't die of hunger, the effects on their health are fatal. Researches indicate that nutrition deficiencies in the first two years of life are irreversible and can affect lifelong health of children.

Using data from the Poverty Mapping Project at Columbia University, this map was created by a PhD candidate Benjamin D. Henning at the University of Sheffield (www.viewsoftheworld.net). As a starting point, he used a plain gridded dataset that represents the prevalence of child malnutrition. Then, he applied another filter to resize each grid according to the number of underweight children under the age of five living in that area.

The map reminds us that, while we think of Africa being the worst affected region, child malnutrition problem is as pressing in South Asia and large parts of South East Asia.
