Journée de matchs contre la faim pour la crise du Sahel
A l’heure qu’il est, dans la région du Sahel en Afrique de l’Ouest, plus de 15 millions de personnes risquent de devenir des victimes de la famine. Déjà plus de 1,3 million d’enfants souffrent de malnutrition aigüe, compte tenu des pertes de récoltes, de la hausse des prix alimentaires et de l’impact du changement climatique. Beaucoup craignent que la région puisse devenir la prochaine Corne de l’Afrique. Il y a eu trop de pertes en vies humaines l’an dernier parce que le monde a tardé à réagir.
Le football est le seul sport véritablement mondial suivi et joué par des hommes d’affaires aussi bien que par des enfants de rue, dans les pays riches comme dans les pays pauvres. Exploitant son pouvoir et sa popularité, l’industrie du football a de plus en plus conscience du bien qu’elle peut faire. Au cours des dernières années, l’Association des ligues européennes de football professionnel[EN] ajoué un rôle important dans les efforts visant à sensibiliser l’opinion à la lutte mondiale contre la faim.
Pour donner le coup d’envoi de la campagne, la Journée de matchs contre la faim se tiendra du 31 mars au 1er avril. Tous les matchs joués par plus de 300 clubs dans 20 ligues de 16 pays de toute l’Europe serviront à sonner l’alarme sur la crise du Sahel. Le message de la campagne sera diffusé à des millions de supporteurs de Glasgow à Madrid et de Lisbonne à Moscou.
L'Office Humanitaire des Communautés Européennes (ECHO) et la FAO travaillent de concert au Sahel en aidant les populations à survivre et en leur donnant les moyens de se nourrir à l’avenir. Le football est aussi un travail d’équipe et rassemble des communautés et des nations autour d’un plus vaste objectif.
